Caesar, Question 2

We obviously know which of the funeral speeches had the biggest impact on the plebeians of Rome. Think about public speakers you have heard. What made them particularly effective to you? Which of the funeral speeches would have been most effective on you personally? Would you have been swayed by the Spartan or florid style? Why do you think that is?

I am most swayed by speakers who are clear and to the point. I don't want to be yelled at, but I don't want every other word to be "um" either. I like a speaker to be confident and clear. Personally, I like the clear, simple style of Brutus's speech, but I also like the emotional appeal and repitition of Antony's speech. If I had to choose one style, I guess I'd go with the florid because of the emotional appeal. If someone can paint a heart wrenching picture in my head, theres a good chance they'll win me over.

  2. I like Spartan style. I would rather have someone speak to me and tell me the facts. I don't like Florid, because they try to put "flowers" into you head. And they hid their real objective inside the flowers... All kinds of trickery is bad. But personally, I don't like Brutus's speech, just because Brutus is a backstabbing friend. Of course, florid type of style is the type I like to use on people, because... they agree with you. I think the most effective style was Florid. Repeatitive and emotions help stir the people up, like it did with Antony.

  3. I tend to remember speeches that are clear, concise, and to the point. Therefore, the Spartan style of speech is most effective to me. However, I believe that speeches with emotional appeal are more effective to the general populous. How else could great and evil leaders like Hitler rise to power?

  4. I personally liked Antony's speech. The emotional appeal made it "stick". Speeches that are straightforward like the Spartan style tend to bore me.

  5. i would probably prefer to be swayed by a straightforward speech, but I would probably definately be more impacted bythe Florid style because emotions mean a lot to me and I tend to think that anything that anyone says is true... i'm very gullible. and because Anotny spoke last, that would have an effect on my gullibility.

  6. I think a good speaker should be able to attract the audience with both words as well as emotions. I think a speaker that has no emotion is rather boring. For a speaker to gain my attention he/she must speak an interesting topic and have the emotions to back up their thoughts.

  7. If I were living in that time I probably would prefer the Florid style, again because of the emotional appeal, even if I am being completely tricked and not understanding every word of what's being said.

  8. Speeches tend to stick better based on their appeal rather than manner. A speaker who is firm, expresses no emotion, and sounds like a robot is automatically uninteresting and the majority of the audience will forget them. Speeches that have an emotional influence have a better chance at being remember due to the impact and how they influence or relate to the individual.

  9. The florid style would have definitely been more effective on me concerning the funeral speeches because I, and most other people, think of funerals as an emotional event. Although, both styles have their own advantages and disadvantages. If you were making a speech to me about sliced bread then I'd prefer it to be spoken in the Spartan style. :) Sliced bread just isn't something for me to get emotional over...haha

  10. I am definitely more persuaded by speeches that use an abundance of emotional appeal. So i would prefer the florid style of speaking. I think that the more the speaker can relate to his audience through emotion, the more effective the speech will be.

  11. If the speaker has more of an appeal and not just straight to the point with what he is saying it is better. The one done by Antony was what I liked the most because it attracted the followers and had a lot of appeal.
